Inflation Vs. Investing
Here's a table representing inflation over the course of 10 years, measured up against a fictive investment with the same money. Which one wins - and when?
The calculations performed are inflation accumulating for 10 years vs. inflation and investing given various inflation and investment yield rates (including negative for the investment). The full amount is considered invested.
When you calculate the result, there are at least two ways to do it:
- Calculate the number for original amount minus inflation plus investment yield (which can be negative). The order is insignificant, as you will get the same number whether you adjust the amount up first for yield and then down for inflation or down first for inflation and then up for yield. The number with inflation vs. investing, "asynchronously", is in the fourth column, labeled "Invested Amount".
- The other way is to subtract the yield from the negative inflation percentage so they happen "simultaneously" throughout the year. The number with "real interest rate", meaning added/subtracted interest rates, used is in the sixth column, labeled "Invested Amount Real Interest".
Not sure which is the norm in the fiscal world.
The inflation-adjusted amounts in the "After Inflation Amount" column represent how much the specified input amount (1,000,000 - one million) will be worth in "today's money" the specified n (10) years from now - given no investing or interest.
